The Race America Deserves But Won’t Get

There’s a whole lot of crazy going on in the GOP primary field.  From the delusions of Gingrich and Cain, to the forgotten four (Johnson, Miller, Roemer and McCotter), to the zealots like Santorum and Paul, to the front runners (Romney, Bachmann, and Perry) and the tease (Palin), I haven’t seen any opponent that I believe can beat Obama.

Save one.  John Huntsman, former Governor of Utah and former Ambassador to China under Obama would be a viable threat to Obama.  Don’t get me wrong, I fully support Obama and Huntsman is a conservative with whom I disagree on many issues. But he’s sane.  He believes the science behind evolution and global warming, and he’s attacked his opponents for rejecting science in favor of ideology.  For this reason among others, he won’t win the nomination.  I think that’s too bad.  The fact is the nominee is going to be Perry , Romney, Bachmann or Palin.  I’m making the uncourageous prediction that it will be Perry.  That means that we’re going to have an election filled with all the accusations about Obama being un-American, Muslim, Socialist, Communist, Fascist, Kenyan, blah blah blah.  We’ll hear all the nonsense about Global Warming being a hoax/plot by liberal scientists to get research money/ socialist camel’s nose under the tent, blah blah blah.

These aren’t ideas.  This is not a great debate.  But imagine a Huntsman candidacy against Obama.  Imagine a debate between two people who have worked together, who have a mutual respect, who agree on facts engaging in a debate over how to respond to said facts.  That’s the kind of election we need.  I’ll happily risk Obama losing to Huntsman if it would mean the American people got a debate between two adults.

Sadly, we’re going to get a debate between an adult and a Tea Partier.
