How should I put this? Alissa and I have had to be more…active?…in our parenting of Harry lately. I won’t go into detail, but he’s in a phase where he thinks he’s got it all figured out. As a result of this hard won wisdom, he hasn’t had much regard for the instructions of his elders. You know…because he’s got it all figured out.
Well, Annie’s birthday is a week away, and Harry wants to get her something. We agreed to let him earn a birthday gift for Annie by doing chores. The shopping trip is tomorrow, so tonight was the night for nom to do the chores He decided he wanted to do four chores. He helped me load and unload the dishwasher and take out the trash. He also cleaned and vacuumed the laundry closet and helped put laundry away.
Here’s what I’m so proud of. He did these chores willingly and enthisiastically, all so that he could get a gift for his little sister. The chores weren’t much when it comes down to it, but the sentiment and spirit of giving underlying the work was enough to bolster a dad’s faith in the midst of a rough parenting week.
Good job, Harry! I’m very proud of you.
