Our Session with Urban Utopia Photography

Back in May, our family had a photo session with Urban Utopia Photography.  My writing about the session focused primarily on the setting.  I did want to take a moment and write a little bit about our experience with Dana, the photographer.  For all the props that she brings, all the posing of her subjects, she takes the time to engage with and get to know her subjects, and she is excellent at discerning behaviors that get to the heart of who her subjects are and to capture that behavior in a single moment.  It is with this method that her sessions go beyond simple portraiture and into the realm of photojournalism.

For our experience, she took some posed pictures of our family in various groupings.  Then she took the kids and walked them into the field and over to a little copse of trees, allowing them to be themselves, free in their own identities.  While she was doing this , Alissa and I looked up from our conversation and found her pointing the camera us and capturing us in an unposed, unscripted moment.

She also blogs about her experience with her subjects.  Here’s her entry for us

I would strongly recommend Urban Utopia Photography.  Thanks Dana!
